<한미갤러리-서울>에서 프로젝트 그룹 <10AAA>, <스페이스 바421>와 함께 한국에서  활동중인 독일 출신의 미디어 독일 출신의 미디어 작가 막스 노이퍼트 작가의 최근작을 전시합니다. 본 전시에서는 온라인상의 위성 지도(Map)에서 시작한 ‘조감도 따라가기-Following a bird’s perspective’ 부터의 연작인 미디어 설치 시리즈와 함께 미디어의 ‘오류’들에 착안하여 작업한 ‘있을 것 같은 단어-Probable Word’등 현대 사회의 미디어 기술을 활용하여 우리가 가진 생각과 미디어를 통해 얻게 되는 정보들과 우리가 사는 환경에 대해 다시 돌아 보게 하는 계기가 될 것입니다. 

  전시 제목인 <Planet B>는 기후변화(Climate Change)와 관련하여 785,000명의 사람들이   2015년 11월의 행진하는 행사를 가지면서 내건 슬로건 “There is no Planet B” 에서 빌려 온 것 입니다. 기후변화는 더이상 되돌릴 수 없을 만큼 심각한 우리의 환경을 변화시켜 하루에 140종이 멸종되는 상황에 이르렀습니다. 인간의 이기심과 허영심은 우리가 건강한 세상에서 살 수 있는 기회를 앗아 갔으며 <Planet B>는 우리에게 대안의 행성이 존재 하지 않는다는 것을 의미합니다. 이 때문에 우리는 더이상 우리의 세상이 파괴되지 않도록 노력해야 한다는 의미도 포함하고 있습니다.  

  노이퍼트는 이번 한미갤러리 전시공간에 ‘조감도 따라가기-Following a bird’s perspective’ 연작을 한국 문화를 상징하는 간단한 한옥 구조를 만들어 설치하고 그 안에 고운 모래를 깔고 영상 설치를 하여 관객이 영상을 관조하는 것만이 아니라 경험하고 느낄 수 있는 영상작품을 선보일 예정입니다. 또한 ‘Unnamed’ 라는 제목의 우리가 익숙하게 사용하는 자동 인물 촛점 프로그램의 오류로 인한 풍경 사진들을 보여주는 영상과 책 작품을 만날 수 있을 것입니다. 이와 유사하게 프로그램의 오류로 만들어지는 ‘있을 것 같은 단어-Probable Word’ 는 핸드폰에서 자동완성기능으로 만들 수 있는 언어로 시를 만들어 제작한 책 작업을 함께 전시 할 예정입니다. 

 

막스 노이퍼트(Max Neupert)는 한국에서 활동중인 독일 태생의 미디어 작가입니다. 독일 부르그기비헨스타인 미술디자인대학에서 미디어아트로 마스터 학위를 받았고 바이마르의 바우하우스 대학에서 미디어 아트 전공 조교수를 지냈으며 바우하우스 대학의 박사과정을 이수한 후 현재는 영남대학교 트랜스 아트 전공의 초빙교수로 재직중입니다. 2005년 첫 개인전 이래 2011년 호주 시드니에서의 ‘Satellite Zodiac, General Store Contemporary’, 2010년 독일 바이바르에서의 ‘오디오 비디오 퍼포먼스-a/v performance’와 2004년 캐나다 쿼백에서의 ‘Création, Exhibition The Odyssey of Light, Museum of civilization’ 등 다양한 전시에 참여 한바 있습니다. 한국에서는 광복 70주년 기념으로 대구문화예술회관 미술관에서 2015년 미디어 파사드 전시에 참여 하기도 하였습니다.  http://www.maxneupert.de/

• 오프닝 콘서트 정보

케빈 팍스 (확장된 기타, 오브제들)와 막스 노이퍼트(랩탑, 프로젝션) 은 시청각 기능이 연결된 악기와 오프제들, 확장된 기타로 듀엣으로 “Remote”를 연주할 예정입니다. 두명의 연주자들은 미리 녹음된 마이크로 루프를 창작하고 소리 예제들을 실연하여 시간을 얼리기 위해 노력할 것이다.  

 

케빈 팍스

뉴욕 출신인 케빈 팍스는 작곡가이자 즉흥연주가. 현재 대구 가톨릭 대학 음악대학에서 학생들을 지도하고 있습니다. 브루클린 컬리지(CUNY)에서 음악을 전공하였으며 다트마우스 컬리지에서 M.A. 학위를 받았으며 뉴욕의 런셀러 과학 기술학교에서 잠시 일한 후에 서울예술대학에서 컴퓨터 음악을 지도하였습니다. 버지니아 대학의 컴퓨터 음악 작곡 전공 박사과정에 있으며, 찰스 돋지, 커티스 반, 노아 츠레쇠브스키, 래리 폴란스키, 존 애플통, 트리스티안 울프, 주디스 샤틴, 테드 코페이, 매튜 버틀러등게게 사사 받았습니다. http://www.kevinparks.net.

Hanmi Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, titled Planet B, by German artist Max Neupert working with mixed media and video installation. This exhibition is organized in collaboration with Space_BA421 & 10AAA. 

The title Planet B refers to one of slogans of the global climate march, where over 785,000 people joined to demand political action against the  causes of climate change in November 2015. The activist's slogan “There is no Planet B” is a play on words that we have no alternative, no plan B, so we have to act now not to destroy our own life support. The artist understands the Planet B as a parallel world, a possibility, an utopia which is still in our reach if we make the right choices now.

The exhibition explores human’s view and impact on our environment in the age of the anthropocene. Following a bird’s perspective is a video  installation using Google Earth with the viewpoint locked to the real-time position of the the Spot-7 reconnaissance satellite. Just like an “out-of-body experience” we take a perspective looking down on us. The military-analytic view distinguishes itself from the immersion of the illusion-space Panorama. For the exhibition the projection uses sand to make the image visible and tangible.

The recent book project, Probable Words presents poems, which are generated using the predictive text  function of a smart-phone keyboard.

Unnamed is an artist's book with 114 photos from the artists personal archive. It collects images where face recognition software detected a face, yet there is none. Every spread features at least one instance of failure of the algorithm, compiling to a Facebook of false positives.

Eighteen secret golf courses is a projection and artist's book about censorship in Korean maps and the militarization of the Korean peninsula.

Planet B is also the title of a new sculpture, a greenhouse in the style of a traditional Korean house. It is filled with cleaned air and breathes rhythmically.

    

  Max Neupert is a visual artist, working at the intersections of auditive and visual media, perspective and view, mapping and censorship. His works have been acquired by the collections of the German Ministry for Environment, the International Airport Montreal and the Museum of Civilisation Quebec. From 2008 to 2013 he was teaching at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His investigation in “Satellite Astrology” has been presented at the ISEA 2010 and was exhibited in Sydney and Madrid. In 2011 he initiated and hosted the 4th international Pure Data convention in Weimar, a week long venue with conference, exhibition, workshops and concerts which attracted 140 people from 26 countries. He designed the Interactive Performance Platform in the Digital Bauhaus Lab and taught a telematic class between Bauhaus-Universität and UCSD. Max currently is a PhD candidate at the Bauhaus-Universität and researches on video imagery as sampling material in a musical context. • Info about the opening concert: 

Kevin Parks (extended guitar, objects) and Max Neupert (Laptop, projection) are playing "Remote": a duet of extended guitar, objects and a concatenative audiovisual instrument. Both players try to freeze time by createing micro loops of prerecorded and live sampled sound.  

 

Kevin Parks:

Originally from New York, Kevin Parks is an active composer and improviser currently teaching at Catholic University of Daegu, School of Music. A graduate of Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music (CUNY), Kevin later received his M.A. from Dartmouth College. After working briefly at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, Kevin taught computer music at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Virginia (Composition & Computer Music). Kevin has studied composition with Charles Dodge, Curtis Bahn, Noah Creshevsky, Larry Polansky, Jon Appleton, Christian Wolff, Judith Shatin, Ted Coffey, and Matthew Burtner. http://www.kevinparks.net/
